For a moment time stood still. Arirya felt as if she was tumbling in a swirl of confusion, as the doctor spoke the words I'm Sorry. He stood there before her as she closed her eyes to the present and connected with the past.
They say time can heal all wounds but sometimes the ticking is so loud you truly believe it is standing still.
The sand on the beach was warm from the sun's ray's; Arirya loved to walk on the edge of the water in the early morning, it gave her a chance to be close to heaven. She made her way up the cove when she stopped; there he stood on the pier watching the seagulls in flight. She couldn't help herself, she was mesmerized by his height and the tanned skin he so proudly displayed. She had walked this path every morning. Now she felt that fate had other plans for her, something in the way he turned and smiled at her. It was his magnetic pull that captured her, and she could feel the change inside herself; swirls of blue light danced in the sun as she continued to walk nearer to him.
"Hello there,"
He had softness to his voice when he spoke; Arirya found herself shyly answering him, then looking away.
"Do you come up to the cove much?"
She cursed herself for being so darn shy, she was never shy! She smiled.
"Yes I do."
She went back to the seagulls in flight, he stood looking at her, but he did not keep her floundering in that pool of awkwardness.
"I love it here!"
He said it with such passion that she stepped back, almost as if there was a fire wall between them. She also loved it here. In fact it was her favorite place to be, and now she was sharing it today with this beautiful stranger. Arirya walked to the edge of the pier, only to have him follow behind her. She could feel the electric vibes, and she knew very well he could feel it too.
"Do you have a name?" he asked.
She stood looking out over the water. She loved the way the early morning sun danced on the water; she could see their reflections perfectly on the surface.
"Arirya Costas, and you, do you have a name?"
Just the excitement of knowing his name sent shivers down her spine; he winked at her as if he knew what she was feeling.
"Jared Michaels, I came to the cove to finish a story I have been working on, what brings you here?"
A light touch on her shoulder brought her plummeting forward through that tunnel of darkness, leaving her quite dizzy in the process.
"The nurse will come out to see you shortly, I'm sorry about your husband."
Watching the doctor walk away Arirya barely able to speak, whispered an inaudible "OK," and closed her eyes once again. The busy sounds around her seem to fade as she found herself flooded by memories that exploded into the inner recesses of her conscious. She could feel herself falling into a tunnel of dark mist and clouds twirling into another place in time.
"Hey, Arirya!"
She could see him as he came running towards her, the smile in his eyes gave a light that said, I only see you. She smiled. The very scent of him invaded her senses such that it felt as if he was right here beside her. "Jared." The whisper of his name escaped her; she could feel his arms wrap around her, protected, loved. Arirya felt the tears as they made their way down her face. As one fell upon her hand the glistening drop slowly splashed, and the tiny wet particles took her back to another special day.
She could smell the sweet scent of the roses. She could see Jared standing there waiting at the end of the isle. His smile once again told her of his happiness. She was beside him and felt herself shiver and the deep trembling in her heart.
"Do you, Jared Michaels; take Arirya Costas as your lawfully wedded wife?"
The preachers words faded as she drew in a deep breath, reliving that day again and hearing Jared speak the words "I do." She could feel him, touch him and she couldn't seem to move she was afraid of losing this moment in time.
She felt the coolness of the water from the ocean as it soothed her warm, sandy feet, and of Jared splashing the water on her body. His laughter echoing against the waves crashing upon the rocks.
"Hey Girl, come on in!"
He shouted and dove into the ocean, swimming away from her. She could feel her heart start to pound as she combed the water with her eyes, his laughter still echoing in her ears. "Jared!" She could hear her own screaming, coming from somewhere in the distance echoing back, very unforgiving.
She could feel the shaking of her body, the tears falling freely now, she could not remember where she was. This was causing her body to go in the flight or fight mode. She was still looking for Jared in the water as the hospital staff gathered around her, her body losing all perceptions of the present. She was still in the ocean, seeking, searching with her eyes. She could hear someone from afar calling for her.
"Who are you?"
Her words seem to come in slow motion, questions in her mind wanting out but couldn't. She could feel hands on her, all around her but could not see who, yet wanting Jared to hold her tight, to make the fear subside.
"Jared!" She screamed
Her voice no longer sounding like her own. The warmth in her arm spread its way over her entire body and she began this warm journey into sweet darkness.
"Arirya, my love", she looked into the mist that surrounded her and she could see him moving toward her.
"Jared, she whispered, Can I go with you?"
Clinging to her only hope, he spoke to her. She could see this light around him as he stood before her. His words in death were as strong as those in life.
"Miss me my love, remember me, and cling to the memories. You are young you will go on, I was meant to visit a short while, but now I must go".
Arirya smiled as she fell into a deep sleep. Sinking into the warm darkness, she felt Jared's arms around her. The light was fading now and she rolled over. Curled up on her side she smiled, and waved good-bye.
